Male to probe unrest

Male, March 2 (IANS) Maldives President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Friday announced a probe into the recent political unrest that swept the country.

The president called for restoring peace in the country.
Widespread turmoil between Jan 14 and Feb 8 in the country forced the then president Mohamed Nasheed to resign.
Hassan added that as Maldives’ economy depends on tourism, it is important that the country remains peaceful. He reassured that life and property of all citizens will be protected.
The president also urged the political parties to put forward national interest before politics, the haama daily quoted him as saying at a press conference.
He said: “The way of responsible leaders should be to resolve disputes peacefully through dialogue.”
