Bangladeshi militants threaten UN workers

Dhaka, April 21 (Inditop) An Islamist militant body has asked officials of United Nations and other international organisations to stop work and immediately leave Barisal district in southern Bangladesh, the police said.

The Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) threatened the officials of the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), International Federation of the Red Crescent (IFRC) and World Food Programme (WFP) to quit the country and stop their activities in the region immediately, New Age newspaper said.

Three letters written in Bengali by the banned Islamist outfit were delivered by post at the offices of the three organisations in Barisal city.

In the letter, the sender asked the chiefs of the three organisations to shut down their operations and quit Bangladesh.

The sender also threatened the officials with dire consequences if they did not follow the order, the police said.
