Work constructively, we will support: Mamata to Modi

Kolkata, Dec 6 (IANS) Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee Saturday said her party would extend “total support” to the Narendra Modi government at the centre if it undertook “constructive work” for the people’s benefit.

Addressing a rally at the base of Mahatma Gandhi’s statute on Mayo Road on the 22nd anniversary of the Babri mosque demolition, Banerjee said: “Run the government properly, do constructive work that benefits all sections of the people, and we will extend total support to you.”
In an apparent reference to the Bharatiya Janata Party, she said one should abhor the politics of division, as it was out of tune with the Indian culture.
Banerjee said it was “wrong” to paint all madrassas as “supporters of terror”, in the wake of the Oct 2 Burdwan bomb blast.
Averring that terrorists have no religion, she said: “Criminals are criminals. Terrorists are terrorists. That is their only identity. If a road accident takes place, will you go and find out the religious identity of the victim and perpetrators? No.”
Without mentioning the probe into the multi-crore-rupee Saradha chit fund scam, which has already landed two Trinamool parliamentarians Kunal Ghosh and Srinjoy Bose in jail with many other party leaders facing grilling from the Central Bureau of Investigation, Banerjee said: “You cannot scare us with the threat of jailing us. We have seen enough struggles. We are ready to fight politically.”
The day was observed as communal harmony day by the Trinamool.
