CPI(M) opposes any compromise with Maoists

Bangalore, Oct 26 (Inditop.com) Communist Party of India (Marxist) politburo member Sitaram Yechury Monday said state and central governments should not go in for any compromise with Maoists.

The Maoists’ violence was a serious law and order problem and his party would support strong action to curb it, Yechury told reporters here on the margins of a meeting organised by CPI(M) against rise in prices.

The central and West Bengal governments should take steps to end the violence by Maoists, Yechury said.

The Maoists have stepped up violence recently in several parts of the country. They kidnapped a police officer in West Bengal and released him on Oct 22 after a group of women arrested during anti-Maoist operations in the state were released on bail.

On the party’s organisational matters, Yechury said the party was discussing fixed term for its office-bearers. For instance, it could be three terms for an office with a five-year tenure, he said.

Yechury declined to elaborate the posts that are to be brought under the fixed term norm.

CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat has been reported as having said in Delhi that he wished the fixed tenure was for his post as well.
