Tamil Nadu leaders pay tribute to Gandhi

Chennai, Oct 2 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi here Saturday on his 141st birth anniversary.

The two paid floral tributes at a portrait of Gandhi at Marina Beach. Union Telecom Minister A. Raja and other state ministers also paid their respects to the Father of the Nation.

Gandhi was remembered by members of the industry as well. Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated in a traditional manner at the boiler plant of public sector Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. in Tiruchirapalli.

A.V. Krishnan, executive director, called upon all members of the BHEL community not only to practice the timeless principles of ‘ahimsa’ (non-violence), austerity, tolerance, honesty and peace by which Gandhi lived his life, but also to help propagate these throughout the country.

On behalf of all BHEL employees, Krishnan placed a sandalwood garland around the statue of the Mahatma in the firm’s administrative building and paid floral tributes too.

Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary is also marked as the International Day of Non-Violence.
