Punjab Police to probe Namdhari’s gun licence

Chandigarh, Nov 26 (IANS) Punjab Police will probe the issuance of an arms licence in the state to Sukhdev Singh Namdhari, former chairman of the Uttarakhand Minorities Commission who has been arrested by Delhi Police for conspiracy in the killing of liquor baron Ponty Chadha and his brother.

Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini told media in Jalandhar, 150 km from here, Monday that an inquiry would be held into how Namdhari procured an arms licence for his 7.62 mm pistol from Mohali (near Chandigarh).
Namdhari, a resident of Bajpur in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar district, does not live in Mohali or Punjab.
“We will determine how the licence was issued here and action will be taken,” Saini said.
Delhi Police arrested Namdhari Saturday for conspiracy in the killing of billionaire Ponty Chadha and his brother Hardeep Chadha. Namdhari’s gun was recovered by police Sunday from his Bajpur house.
The Chadha brothers had been provided armed security by Punjab Police even though they did not hold any official position in the state or elsewhere.
