Kashmir minister accused of sexual assault told to quit (Lead, Changing dateline)

Jammu, Feb 7 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir minister Shabir Ahmad Khan, accused by a woman doctor of sexual assault, was Friday told by the Congress to resign from the ministry.

Official sources said Khan, the minister of state for health, met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and offered his resignation.
The sources said Abdullah earlier spoke to the Congress leadership asking it to advise the minister to resign after a police complaint was slapped against him.
Congress sources told IANS that the party told Khan to step aside until he was proved innocent.
A Srinagar doctor has alleged that Khan attempted to sexually assault her when she was met him at his office Jan 28.
A First Information Report was registered against the minister in Shaheed Ganj police station Thursday following a direction from the chief judicial magistrate, Srinagar.
If proved guilty, Khan can face imprisonment up to two years.
