Bangladesh policeman caught in Tripura, handed back

Agartala, Sep 27 (IANS) A Bangladesh police official, who crossed into Tripura through the Sonamura border, about 55 km from here, was captured by a group of villagers and later handed over to Bangladesh security forces, police said here Thursday.

“Five Bangladesh police personnel led by sub-inspector Nurun Nabi crossed the Sonamura border early Wednesday to apprehend a Bangladeshi criminal hiding in Kalamchaura village. However, villagers drove them away and managed to capture Nabi,” a police official told reporters here.
The captured official was later handed over to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) by India’s Border Security Force (BSF), the official said.
“Border Security Force has asked the BGB to initiate legal action against the intruders,” the official added.
All the five policemen belonged to the Burichang police station in Comilla district of Bangladesh, police said.
Tripura shares about 855 km of border with Bangladesh, some of it unfenced and running through dense forests, making it difficult for Indian security forces to check infiltration.
India is erecting fence along the 4,095-km India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram to check trans-border movement of militants and to prevent infiltration and border crimes.
