Beijing, July 25 (IANS) China plans to turn its coastal city of Xiamen facing the Taiwan Strait into a major shipping hub.
Part of the plan is to build a 100,000-tonne luxury cruise liner, a shipping terminal and a business centre, the Global Times reported Wednesday.
The Southeast China International Shipping Centre project will cost nearly 17 billion yuan (about $2.6 billion), Xiamen deputy mayor Kang Tao said.
The move is expected to spur economic growth.
Xiamen, known for its export-oriented factories, has become one of the country’s top leisure and relaxation destinations in recent years.
