New York, Oct 8 (IANS) Twenty-three business owners from New York City have been arrested for ‘sneaking’ illegal Chinese immigrants into the US to work at restaurants and other establishments, officials said.
James Hayes Jr., Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agent in charge for New York, said the Chinese nationals were kept in unsanitary conditions and were transported to and from the establishments daily.
The arrests were made Wednesday and Thursday at the employment establishments, located in the city’s Chinatown neighbourhood, Fox News reported.
Hayes said the immigrants had paid up to $75,000 each to be smuggled into the US from China.
It was unclear how long the illegal activity had been going on.
