Raja associate Sadiq Batcha dead

Chennai, March 16 (IANS) Sadiq Batcha, a close associate of former union communications minister Andimuthu Raja under the scanner of the CBI in the 2G spectrum scam, died here Wednesday afternoon, officials at Apollo Hospital said.

According to the officials, Batcha was brought to the hospital around 1.30 p.m by his wife and another person and was pronounced dead.

The doctors at the Apollo Hospital are tight-lipped on the cause of Batcha’s death. His body has been taken to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had raided Batcha’s company Green House Promoters and his house in connection with the money trail of the 2G spectrum scam.

Batcha hailed from Raja’s native town Perambalur in Tamil Nadu and became close associate of the former minister through a DMK functionary.

Raja’s wife became a director in Green House Promoters floated by Batcha but she resigned in 2008.

However, Raja’s brother A. Kaliyaperumal and a close relative, R.P. Prameshkumar, continue to be on the board of Green House Promoters.

The company from being a non-descript entity with an equity base of Rs.100,000 in 2004, grew to over Rs.600 crore revenue company within a short time.

The CBI is looking at the stupendous growth of the company in such a short span.
