DMK to ally with PMK, but no Rajya Sabha seat for Ramadoss

Chennai, May 30 (IANS) The ruling DMK Sunday decided to ally with the PMK but expressed inability to offer it a Rajya Sabha seat this time, dashing hopes of PMK leader and former central health minister Anbumani Ramadoss’s re-election.

The DMK’s high-level action committee, meeting under the leadership of party leader and Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi, decided to offer a Rajya Sabha seat to PMK only after 2011 assembly elections.

Ramadoss’ Rajya Sabha term ends next month.

‘In the Rajya Sabha elections to be held on June 17, party candidates K.P.Ramalingam, T.M.Selvaganapathy and S.Thangavel will contest with the support of allies,’ Karunanidhi told reporters after the meeting.

The decision to ally with PMK came after the committee considered the two letters written by PMK leader S.Ramadoss, which cited the party’s long standing relations with the DMK and said it has forgotten the ‘unfortunate happenings’ and hoped Karunanidhi has forgotten them too.

The DMK also requested all political parties to extend support for early passage of the women’s quota bill, reserving one-third seats in parliament and state assemblies for women and also urged the central government to take immediate action to curb the rising prices of essential items.
