Bad weather keeps Sonia away from Moga rally

Moga (Punjab), Jan 19 (IANS) Bad weather Thursday prevented Congress president Sonia Gandhi from addressing a rally in Moga town though she made it to the second venue, Kapurthala, in poll-bound Punjab.

Gandhi, who was to address a rally in this Punjab town Thursday afternoon, could not land due to bad weather and thick fog over the region. This was her first rally in the state where elections to 117 assembly seats will be held Jan 30.

‘Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s visit to Moga was today cancelled due to bad weather. In her message announced at the rally by the party in-charge for Punjab Thakur Gulchain Singh Charak she said she was sorry that she could not make it to the rally due to the bad weather,’ a Congress spokesperson said here.

However, he said that Sonia Gandhi went to Kapurthala town, 200 km from Chandigarh, to address her second rally.

‘The weather there had cleared later in the day and she arrived in Kapurthala,’ the spokesperson said.

Gandhi’s message was read out to the gathering at Moga in which she said that the ‘worst was over and it was matter of few days more when the people of Punjab will have a friendly government led by the Congress unlike the current one which has victimized people all over’.

Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh also apologised to the people, who had gathered for the rally, for Gandhi’s inability to address them.
