Mob goes on rampage as cops ignore gang-rape complaint

Lucknow, March 28 (IANS) Angry at police inaction in the alleged gang-rape of a minor girl, a mob in Chandauli went on the rampage Thursday, damaging government property and beating up policemen, police said.

The incident occurred at Chandauli, about 480 km from the state capital Lucknow.
According to information available here, after the gang-rape of a 12-year-old girl came to light in the Sakaldiha police station area in the district, angry villagers went to the police with a complaint against five local youth.
When the police refused to file a first information report (FIR), the angry mob first blockaded traffic on the road at the Alimpur square and then ransacked the police station, chased away the policemen and set on fire an office at the tehsil (administrative unit).
The crowd also pelted stones at the police party and damaged several vehicles, including police jeeps.
When senior officials were informed about the violence, they rushed to the spot with additional police force to restore calm.
After great persuasion, senior police officials managed to pacify the angry crowd. FIRs were registered against Vipul Singh, Vikki, Prince and two other local youth.
“The police have lodged FIRs and efforts are being made to arrest the culprits,” a home department spokesman told IANS here.
