Goa to inspect kitchens after mid-day meal fiasco

Panaji, June 16 (IANS) Goa’s education department Thursday asked the state food and drugs administration (FDA) to regularly inspect all kitchens run by self-help groups in the state which provide meals under the mid-day meal scheme.

The move comes a day after 54 students of the Murgao High School in Vasco, 30 kms from here, were hospitalised immediately after eating a mid-day meal of bread and peas curry, which had a lizard in it.

‘We have asked the state FDA to conduct monthly inspections of the canteens of 83 self help groups, which provide food under the midday meal scheme across Goa,’ Director, Education Celsa Pinto told reporters here.

Police have already arrested the cook responsible for preparing the meal and are looking out for the promoter of Saraswati self help group Urmila Salgaonkar.
