Michelin to commence tyre production in India mid-2013

Chennai, March 25 (IANS) French tyre-maker Michelin hopes to roll out its truck radial tyres from its Indian plant near here some time during the middle of 2013, a senior company official said Monday.

“Production will start during the middle of this year. We are installing equipment. We will be making truck radial tyres,” Prashant Prabhu, president, Michelin Group Africa, India and Middle East told reporters here on the sidelines of the company’s launch of Tamil Nadu travel guide.
The plant is being set by Michelin India Tamil Nadu Tyres Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of Michelin.
However, he declined to comment on the reasons for the delay. Earlier the company officials said the plant would start commercial operations by the end of 2012.
He said the market cycles will always be there and the company will manage that when queried about the timing of the launch.
The market for the commercial vehicles is on the downside now in the country.
According to Prabhu, Michelin has sold all the tyres it had imported into India without disclosing any numbers.
The upcoming Indian plant on 290 acres near here would be Michelin’s largest facility in the world in terms of surface area, company officials had earlier said.
Launching the travel guide “Chennai and Tamil Nadu – The Green Guide”, Prabhu said the book is priced at Rs.1,100 and will be retailed at various outlets.
According to him, Michelin has published 114 such titles and the venture is a commercial activity for the company but he declined to reveal the number of travel guides sold by the company worldwide and the revenue earned.
He said that with the travel guide, the company aims to promote and improve travel experience in Tamil Nadu.
Prabhu said Michelin also publishes “Red Guide” which tells a traveller about the cuisine of a particular region and the outlets where the food is available.
