Fast clearance for housing projects soon: Minister

New Delhi, March 24 (IANS) The government will soon set up a single-window clearance system to cut delays in obtaining permits for housing projects and check cost escalation, Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Ajay Maken said here Sunday.

“We have asked the states to set up a single window system for various permits,” Maken said at the national editors’ conference here.
He said that around 34 permits are required for housing projects and though the government has been able to bring down the average time taken for them from 227 to 196 days, a lot more needs to be done.
“The single window system will bring down the average approval time from 196 days to 45-60 days. Delay in obtaining approvals often increases the cost of a housing project 1.5 times,” said Maken.
He said the ministry was formulating a single window system for clearance of real estate projects throughout the country following the report of a committee for streamlining approval procedures for real estate projects.
Noting that there was a shortage of around 18.78 million housing units in the country, the minister said most of it related to low income groups.
“We have sanctioned projects worth Rs.41,723 crore for building 1,569,000 houses/dwelling units for lower income groups,” said Maken.
Of these, around one million houses were either ready or under various stages of completion, he said.
